A Detroit Lions fan was killed at a tailgate party following Sunday’s victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, according to police. A suspect is in custody.

According to the Detroit Free Press, the incident took place at approx. 4:30 p.m. ET when a fight started to escalate. As they put up their hands to start fighting, the suspect took out a gun and fired off at least two rounds.

Another person was also taken to the hospital and is in critical condition, per the Free Press. Detroit police chief James White spoke with reporters about the situation and confirmed the suspect was licensed to carry a gun.

“Tailgating, drinking and guns. They don’t mix,” White said, via the Detroit Free Press’ Andrea May Sahouri and Jared Ramsey.

White later pointed out the charges that could be on the way. He also noted the lack of conflict resolution while the fight was escalating.

“You’ve got unfortunately two people shot, one dead,” White said. “And you have a suspect that’s in custody, that’s, you know, going to be dealing with some very serious charges … likely murder.”

The Lions suffered their first loss of the season Sunday afternoon, falling to the Bucs 20-16 at Ford Field. Jared Goff looked strong at quarterback, completing 34 of 55 passes for 307 yards, but he threw two interceptions – including one in the fourth quarter as Detroit was closing in on the red zone.

Amon-Ra St. Brown was the top receiver, hauling in 11 receptions for 119 yards. However, he left with an injury, but ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported it was a bruise with some cramping.

On the Tampa Bay side, Baker Mayfield had a strong day, as well. He completed 12 of 19 passes for 185 yards – including 117 to Chris Godwin – and a touchdown, along with a rushing touchdown that proved to be the difference as it put the Buccaneers up 20-16.

One of the key plays in the game, though, came in the first half. The Lions had 18 seconds left in the second quarter with a chance to kick a field goal and make it a 13-9 ballgame. However, Detroit had 12 men on the field when Goff spiked the ball – ending the half after the 10-second runoff.

Afterward, Dan Campbell took responsibility. He said the Lions were trying to run a quick field goal play, but said that decision meant “their head coach cost them.”

“I asked for improvement from last week. That was the story,” Campbell said, via DetroitLions.com’s Tim Twentyman. “And we did improve, and the coach cost them. Their head coach cost them. Critical error at the end of the half 100 percent on me. . . . There was no way to justify this. It’s a massive error on my part and no one else’s. It was just between hurry-up field goal and clocking it and it was 100 percent my fault.”
