Newsstand: Aidan Hutchinson has huge day despite Lions loss

Former Michigan Wolverines star Aidan Hutchinson made a name for himself in big games in Ann Arbor and has carried that over into the NFL with the Detroit Lions. He darn near won a game by himself on Sunday, recording 4.5 sacks in a 20-16 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to drop the Lions to 1-1 on the 2024 season.

Three of his sacks came in the first 10 minutes of game action on each of the Bucs’ first three drives. He missed out on the team record by one sack, set in 1986 by William Gay. The NFL’s all-time single-game mark was set by Derrick Thomas of the Kansas City Chiefs in 1990 with 7 in one game.

“It was fun out there. It was. I feel like I was just in a flow state, you know? And it was — I was kind of just staying very focused the whole game,” Hutchinson said after the game. “I think our rush lanes were really good. And a couple of those sacks were our d-tackles getting great penetration. And then I’m just kind of wrapping off. I think it’s definitely a lot of my production, but I think a lot of it was our D-line just playing at a high level. And then, but I was reaping a lot of the rewards. So, it’s definitely a result of everybody rushing really hard.”

Hutchinson and the Lions take on the Arizona Cardinals in Glendale in Week 4. Kickoff is set for 4:25 p.m. on FOX.

Michigan quote of the day

“It was huge. We’ve always had a lot of confidence in Marlin and still do. I think he’s going to be a really good player and he’s going to continue to show that in the run and the pass. Confident in him. Fred has been doing it since the spring so it’s good for him to get into the game and get confidence going and add to the depth in the room. The other guy we’ve really been high on and had a touchdown was Hogan Hansen. This guy has all camp has made plays and we’re like, well, when it’s his time, he’ll be ready. He stepped in there and he made a good play. I’m happy for him, too.”
