Shane Beamer calls out officials for decision in final seconds, reveals he sent multiple plays to SEC office

Shane Beamer calls out officials for decision in final seconds, reveals he sent multiple plays to SEC office

South Carolina coach Shane Beamer was not happy with the officiating in a 36-33 home loss against LSU on Saturday. The Gamecocks coach revealed Sunday that he has already sent multiple plays to the SEC league office for review.

The officiating crew called a total of 22 penalties in the contest resulting in 198 yards lost. However, Beamer was upset over one flag they didn’t throw late in the fourth quarter.

With just five seconds left to play, South Carolina line up for the potential game-tying field goal. Unfortunately, kicker Alex Herrerra missed the attempt to the left and LSU celebrated the victory. But Beamer believes the Tigers should have been penalized for taunting.

“This isn’t sour grapes or Shane’s complaining, but I’ve been told that this year in the SEC that celebrations are going to be allowed,” the coach said. “I watched games the first weekend and I see some guys doing celebrations in the end zone. That’s great, let these guys have fun. But I was told celebrations were going to be allowed a little bit. But there’s going to be a very clear emphasis on taunting.

“For that crew yesterday to throw 22 flags, and on the last play of the game, I think there’s two very clear instances of taunting that happened after the kick. And after throwing 22 flags, no one decided to throw a flag on that one.”

The SEC analyzes each call made by officials both in-game and postgame according to the league’s website. This information is then used to determine assignments for games throughout the season.

It wasn’t just a no-call that Shane Beamer took exception to. The coach was also plenty upset with several of the flags that officials threw as well. There’s nothing he can do at this point to change the result, but he at least wants an answer to some of the questions he has.

“A lot of the plays I send in I either have a question about like, what did you see or explain this rule to me better,” Beamer said. “We have sent in quite a few today. And that process is just me going through the tape and essentially just writing it down, the play number and what my question is or comment is and then giving it to George Wynn, our director of football operations, and he submits it. … I’m sure there’s a lot of calls that LSU sent in that they were unhappy about. So there’s some interesting things.”

As frustrating at the calls were, Shane Beamer understands that the best thing to do is take accountability for the things that were within the Gamecocks’ control. That will hopefully help them improve as they prepare to take on Akron this Saturday.

“We need to look at ourselves,” Beamer said. “We’re not going to seek comfort by looking at the officials. So that’s how we’ve handled it, as well. I’ve got to coach better, I’ve got to continue to put these guys in positions to make plays, there’s no doubt about it.”
