Report: Micah Parsons in no rush to secure long-term extension from Dallas Cowboys

Report: Micah Parsons in no rush to secure long-term extension from Dallas Cowboys

Micah Parsons is destined to be the next Dallas Cowboys star to receive a hefty pay raise, but don’t expect it to come anytime soon.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Parsons, the two-time All-Pro linebacker, is in no rush to secure a long-term deal from the Cowboys. When Parsons does get a deal done with Dallas, he is expected to become the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history.

Parsons, 25, has two years remaining (including 2024) on his rookie deal. He is set to play under his $21.3 million fifth-year option in 2025.

Since the moment he first stepped onto the field in 2021, Parsons has been one of the league’s most valuable players on defense. In 51 games, he’s tallied 41.5 sacks, 217 tackles (145 solo), 52 tackles for loss and seven forced fumbles. He got off to a fast start in Dallas’ 33-17 Week 1 win over the Cleveland Browns, recording one sack, four tackles (three solo) and six hurries.

Micah Parsons wants to have a chance to retire as a Cowboy

Dallas, projected to have $29.5 million in cap space next offseason, signed quarterback Dak Prescott and receiver CeeDee Lamb to record-breaking contracts this offseason. Parsons made it clear in July he wants to remain in Dallas for the entirety of his career.

“When you talk about career and legacy, I don’t think there’s a better career you can have than when you’re playing for the star and you have a chance to be the best with the star and you retire a Cowboy,” Parsons said. “You look at [Jason] Witten, you look at Michael Irvin, you look at Emmitt [Smith]. You see they’re still in the community, still active. The star holds so much weight and the legacy that brings.

“Look at Charles [Haley], he still bothers me in the locker room every week. There’s nothing like wearing the star when you do it the right way. So, in terms of being here, I want to be here my whole life. I plan on building a house here and being in Dallas forever. I love the city. Love the community. I love for what it stands for.”
