Paul Finebaum predicts Arch Manning will win the Heisman Trophy at Texas: ‘Book it’

Arch Manning was ready when his number was called on Saturday against UTSA after Texas‘ starting quarterback Quinn Ewers left the game with a strained abdomen.

Manning led the team to a 56-7 win over the Roadrunners, where his impressive performance had the internet buzzing with fans excited to see what the future of Texas football might look like under center.

Expectations have always been high for Manning, who is the latest in a family of three generations worth of notable quarterbacks. But how early is too early to talk about his chances at one day hoisting college football’s top individual prize, the Heisman Trophy? According to Paul Finebaum, it’s only a matter of time before Manning becomes the first in his family to win it.

“Book it,” Finebaum said on SportsCenter on Sunday. “Arch Manning is going to win the Heisman. I am in on that. And by the way, his granddad [Archie Manning] and Peyton [Manning] probably should have won it, and Arch will. Can you imagine? He’s replacing a Heisman favor right now. I don’t know if he’ll win it this year, but Arch Manning will definitely win the Heisman at Texas.”

The former No. 1 overall recruit completed 9 of 12 passes for 223 yards, four touchdowns and no turnovers as they cruised to a 56-7 win over the Roadrunners at home. His first pass of the game was a 19-yard touchdown strike to DeAndre Moore Jr., and Manning also broke free on a 67-yard touchdown run that helped kick-start his successful day. He finish with three rushes for 53 yards and a touchdown after sacks ate a number of his rushing totals.

On the field postgame, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian said that Manning is ready to play each Saturday if the opportunity presents itself. He credited a competitive practice schedule in helping aid Manning in being ready for his first game in an extended in-game role.

For starter Quinn Ewers, Sarkisian couldn’t speak to the severity of his his injury after the game, but noted that no bones appear to be broken. However, it allowed Manning to see the field and get some valuable playing experience for Texas.

It’s unclear whether Ewers will be healthy in time for Week 4’s final non-conference matchup of the regular season against Louisiana Monroe.

The Longhorns are expected to be heavy favorites in that matchup, so giving their QB1 an added week of rest before Texas’ first-ever SEC schedule could be a reason for Sarkisian to start Manning.
