CBS announcers call out Deion Sanders after late-game playcalling vs. Colorado State

CBS announcers call out Deion Sanders after late-game playcalling vs. Colorado State

Late in the fourth quarter in Fort Collins, there was no doubt about who would emerge victorious. Colorado had done enough to beat in-state rival Colorado State and in theory, could have run the clock out of taken knees. Instead, Shedeur Sanders was in the shotgun and launching passes downfield, a few of which hit the ground the stop the clock.

This led to confusion on the CBS broadcast, mainly color analyst Ross Tucker. He did not understand why Colorado was running these plays and even called them out for doing so. Tucket believes head coach Deion Sanders was behind it considering the Buffaloes’ offensive coordinator has a lengthy resume of NFL experience.

“They snapped the ball with 11 seconds on the play clock,” Tucker said. “That is not smart… I got to be honest with you, I think this has got to be coming from Deion Sanders. Because I just can’t imagine this is what Pat Shurmur would want to be doing in this situation. I mean, he’s a three-time NFL head coach. I think Pat would just be taking a knee and not taking a chance of any offensive lineman getting hurt or the quarterback getting hit again.”

Right when Tucker made this point, Colorado snapped the ball again on a 4th and 6 play. One minute was left on the clock as Shedeur Sanders threw an incompletion behind the line of scrimmage but did get hit by a Colorado State defensive lineman.

Tucker wondered what would have happened if Sanders had gotten hurt on that kind of play. The story certainly would not have been about Colorado’s nice win on the road in a rivalry game.

“Could you imagine what we would be saying all week if Shedeur Sanders got his throwing arm hit in a game where they’re up 19 with less than a minute left and they could have taken a knee? I have not seen very many teams, in my life, in NFL or FBS football do that. It’s a really interesting choice,” Tucker said.

Tucker and play-by-play announcer Rich Waltz wondered if Colorado was still lining up to throw because of some of the talk coming from Colorado State in the week leading up. However, they also mentioned Colorado did something similar against North Dakota State in a tighter game. The Bison actually wound up having a Hail Mary chance and fell just four yards short of pulling off a stunning comeback.

During his on-field postgame interview with CBS, Deion Sanders did admit Colorado wanted to get Travis Hunter to 100 yards receiving, something they accomplished. Outside of the nice statistical night for Hunter, not much of an explanation for deciding to throw the ball.

Nonetheless, Colorado has won both of those games. Beating Colorado State was huge for Sanders and the program, hoping to springboard into Big 12 play with some momentum.
