Tyler Van Dyke injury: Wisconsin QB leaves game vs. Alabama on opening drive

Tyler Van Dyke injury: Wisconsin QB leaves game vs. Alabama on opening drive

Tyler Van Dyke left Saturday’s game against Alabama on the opening dive. The Wisconsin quarterback appeared to injure his knee on a third-down scramble and immediately headed to the medical tent.

Van Dyke had Wisconsin driving down the field before his departure. He completed all five of his passes for 16 yards, and the scramble with 11 minutes to play was his first rushing attempt.

After going to the tent, Van Dyke quickly headed to the locker room on a cart. Braedyn Locke then took over at quarterback for Wisconsin.

FOX’s Jenny Taft also offered an update, confirming Van Dyke was favoring his right knee. He was also having trouble keeping his balance, and the emotions were clear as he went to the locker room.

“Gus, I have to say, these reports are not easy ones because it was clear that Tyler Van Dyke was in so much pain leaving that tent, having a hard time keeping his balance,” Taft said. “It was that right knee. He’s heading to the locker room for further evaluation and imaging, but Gus, he was pretty beside himself in the moment.”

Van Dyke is in his first season with Wisconsin after transferring from Miami, where he had an up-and-down go in his three years as the starter. His best season came in 2021 when he threw for 2,931 yards and 25 touchdowns. However, after struggling with interceptions in 2023, he entered the transfer portal and committed to Wisconsin to take over Luke Fickell and Phil Longo’s Air Raid offense.

But Fickell had more plans for Van Dyke. He wanted to get him involved in the run game similar to how he operated in 2021 at Miami, when he took 53 carries for 57 yards. Through two games, he lived up to the billing with 14 carries for 17 yards and a key rushing score against Western Michigan in the season opener.

“If you watch him in his first year at Miami, he moved around a lot more,” Fickell told On3’s Pete Nakos in an exclusive interview at Big Ten Media Days. “That’s what I’ve talked to him about in the little bit I deal with the offense. I don’t tell him where to throw the football.

“But the big emphasis for me has been, ‘Hey, as you come in here you got to train you got to change your body. We got to see a little bit of that more athleticism, that strength you had as a freshman that I saw, as opposed to the last couple of years you were probably just honing in on being a quarterback as opposed to being the whole package.’”
